Recap: Jenkins’ Wind-Blown Bomb Helps Bethany Hand Starrucca First Loss

Thursday, June 19

Bryan Jenkins

Bethany catcher Bryan Jenkins (38, Palmyra Township) took advantage of a stiff breeze blowing out at Bethany Field to deliver a tie-breaking solo home run in the seventh inning as the Blues (6-2) gave Starrucca (7-1) its first loss of the season, 2-1, in Wayne County Baseball League action on Thursday evening.

With the game tied at one Jenkins strode to the plate to start the bottom of the seventh having already gone 0-for-2 against Starrucca ace Danny Millard (40, Beach Lake). Jenkins lofted a 1-0 pitch to center, where Hawks center fielder Millard Reynolds (23, Hawley) appeared to be camped underneath the high fly ball. But as Reynolds went back, he eventually ran out of room as the wind carried the ball out by a mere 10 feet.

“Honestly, I thought it was an easy fly ball,” said Jenkins, who tossed his bat aside in apparent disgust after making contact. “I was almost to first base when I looked up and saw Millard with his back against the wall and still looking up. That’s when I knew it might get out.”

Jenkins’ blast held up as Bethany youngster Richard Peterson (21, Forest City) went the distance, allowing a run on six hits while striking out six, improving to 2-0 in the process. Peterson also added a pair of hits at the plate.

“He’s been dynamite so far this season,” Blues manager Spike Stewart said. “His only weakness before tonight has been his control, and he clearly had his best command today.”

Bethany left fielder Brandon Thornton (47, Hawley) doubled and scored on an RBI ground out by center fielder Dale Aitkenhead (27, Mt. Cobb).

Jenkins’ homer, his second of the season, made a loser of Millard, who went the distance, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while fanning nine. Reynolds doubled and scored in the first for the Hawks, who now have a one-game lead over the Blues in the Southern Division.

Recap: Thornton’s Walk-Off Blast Highlights Wild Day of WCBL Play

Brandon Thornton
Brandon Thornton

Bethany first baseman Brandon Thornton (47, Hawley) rifled a walk-off, three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Blues to a 4-1 victory over still winless Hawley in Wayne County Baseball League action on Tuesday.

Thornton’s blast highlighted a crazy day that included an extra-inning thriller, a late rally by an unbeaten team and a pitching gem.

“I just tried to get into a hitter’s count and then managed to get my pitch,” said Thornton, who came into the game hitting just .087 (2-for-23). “When you’re struggling the way I have been, you just have to try to make a good swing. Fortunately I did that.”

Thornton ripped a 3-1 fastball to left field to end a game that had been tied at 1 since the second inning. Blues center fielder Richie Rivera (35, Thompson) was the lone player in the game with two hits, including a double, and right fielder Justin Malone (35, Paupack Township) added a solo homer in the second.

Blues starter Daniel Hartman (24, Orson) improved to 4-0 by going the distance, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks while striking out 11.

Hawley starter John “Biff” Akers (22, Waymart) took a no-decision after allowing a run on three hits while striking out 10 in eight innings.

♦ Honesdale 5, Damascus 4

Center fielder Sam Beasley (34, Cherry Ridge), a mid-game injury replacement, scampered home with the winning run on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Bryan Northumberland (49, South Canaan) in the bottom of the 13th to give Honesdale the win.

The All-Stars tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by third baseman Paul McDaniel (45, Waymart), his third RBI of the game. Right fielder John “Whiskey” Cavazos (28, Honesdale) singled twice, doubled, scored twice, drove in a run and stole a base in the win. Right-handers Chris Buck (23, Lake Ariel) and Henry Small (26, Waymart), the winning pitcher, combined for seven hitless innings of relief for Honesdale.

First baseman Joe “Crazy Legs” Reynolds (43, Paupack Township) had two hits, three RBIs and a run scored for Damascus.

Waymart 3, Prompton 0

Waymart righty Ed Jones (26, Damascus) was masterful, twirling a three-hit shutout, walking one and striking out 11. He retired 22 straight at one point until a harmless one-out single in the ninth.

Generals catcher Wesley Shepherd (25, Moscow) had a two-run double in the fifth that essentially sealed the win.

Third baseman Eddie Canzler (40, Moscow) led off the game with a double for Prompton.

Starrucca 7, Lake Ariel 2

Starrucca scored all seven of its runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to avoid its first loss of the season. Right fielder Glen Sherman (25, Paupack Township) drove in three and left fielder Felix Inger (45, Forest City) singled twice and scored twice to lead the Hawks. Starter Cole Lunday (43, Palmyra Township) improved to 4-0 by allowing two unearned runs in eight innings.

Catcher John Connolly (50, Lakeville) continued to prove that age is irrelevant, ripping three hits, including a double, and driving in a run for Lake Ariel. He’s now hitting .407 in seven games this season.

Age Matters Little As WCBL Hands Out Weekly Honors

Fifty-year old Lake Ariel catcher John Connolly (Lakeville) and 40-year-old Starrucca lefty Danny Millard (Beach Lake) showed the young kids a thing or two last week. As a result, they’ve been named Batter and Pitcher of the Week by the Wayne County Baseball League.

Connolly was darn near unstoppable, going 8-for-13 (.615) with four doubles, a homer, two RBIs and a run scored. He had at least two hits in each game, including three-hit games in a 4-3 win over Damascus on Thursday and a 13-1 loss to Prompton on Saturday.

“I guess these creaky old knees still have something left,” joked Connolly. “I just wish a few more of those doubles would clear the fence so I don’t have to run so hard.”

For the season, Connolly is hitting .348 with a 1.000 OPS.

Millard was masterful in his two starts, posting a pair of complete-game victories as the Hawks remained the league’s only unbeaten team at 6-0. The veteran hurler opened the week by allowing an unearned run on three hits and a walk while striking out 12 in a 2-1 win over Prompton. On Saturday, he was even better, tossing a two-hit shutout with nine Ks in a 1-0 win over Waymart.

“I’ve been around this game long enough to know that success can be fleeting,” Millard said. “I appreciate this honor, but I’m just trying to get myself ready for my next start.”

In three starts this season, Millard is 3-0 with three complete games, a 1.00 ERA, a 0.56 WHIP and 29 strikeouts in 27 innings.

Starrucca lefty Danny Millard (40, Beach Lake) tossed a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Waymart and the Prompton Anglers burst out for a 13-1 victory to highlight Saturday’s action in the Wayne County Baseball League.

Millard struck out nine while improving to 3-0 with three complete games on the season. He had a perfect game with two outs in the fifth before Waymart left fielder Cy Irvin (44, Uniondale) singled to break up any chance at history.

“I wasn’t really thinking about it,” Millard said about the perfect game. “At my age, I was focused on just being efficient so I can pitch deep into the game. I’m just happy I gave us a chance to win.”

The Hawks scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth when first baseman Billy Carlson (35 Clifford), who had three hits, singled with two outs and scored when left fielder Felix Inger (45, Forest City) followed with an RBI double.

Waymart starter Ed Jones (26, Damascus) allowed one run on seven hits while striking out three in a complete-game loss.

In Lake Ariel, the Prompton Anglers knocked out 16 hits to rout the Angels. Nine different players had at least one hit, led by shortstop Joey Machado (22, Honesdale), who was 3-for-6 with a double and two runs scored. Right fielder Geoffrey Wallace (22, Pleasant Mount) blasted a three-run homer in the third and finished with two hits, three RBIs and two runs.

First baseman Ronald Wilson (41, Canaan Township), center fielder Jason Duncan (42, Forest City) and catcher Bob Murphy (32, Greeley) each added a single, double and two runs scored.

Bethany left fielder Dale Aitkenhead (27, Mt. Cobb) had a two-run double in the fourth that gave the Blues a 4-3 lead at the time.

Waymart 5, Honesdale 1

Waymart rebounded from the tough loss to Starrucca earlier in the day behind third baseman Ray Sykes (26, Mt. Cobb), who doubled, homered, drove in three and scored a run.

The Generals also received a single, double and an RBI from right fielder Dave Forrest (33, Lake Ariel), two hits and an RBI from center fielder Lou Sandoval (32, Clifford), and two hits and a run from shortstop Barry Horton (28, Mt. Cobb).

Waymart starter Brent St. John (27, Greentown) allowed a run on eight hits and four walks while striking out five in 7 2/3 for the win.

First baseman Ernie Martins (49, Honesdale) and second baseman Denny Cole (26, Greentown) both singled twice for Honesdale.

The doubleheader was caused by a request from Waymart to have Thursday off due to an important town hall meeting.

Recap: Hartman, Lunday continue dominance with gems

Daniel Hartman
Daniel Hartman
Cole Lunday
Cole Lunday

Bethany’s Daniel Hartman (24, Orson) and Starrucca’s Cole Lunday (43, Palmyra Township) continued their domination of the Wayne County Baseball League with complete-game gems on Thursday.

Hartman improved to 3-0 with a three-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory as Bethany kept Hawley winless. Hartman finished 10 strikeouts and just one walk.

“I knew they had two games today,” Hartman said, referencing a rare doubleheader against different teams for Hawley. “I just wanted to go at them and see what would happen. Fortunately we got a run and I was able to shut them out.”

Bethany scored in the top of the third when center fielder Dale Aitkenhead (27, Mt. Cobb) delivered a two-out, RBI double.

At Starrucca, Lunday set a WCBL record with 13 strikeouts in eight innings of a 2-1 victory over Honesdale. He allowed five hits and two walks while also improving to 3-0.

“We haven’t lost yet, so I didn’t want to be the first one to suffer an ‘L,'” said Lunday, who was named Pitcher of the Week after going 2-0 last week.

Starrucca, which improved to 5-0, got RBI singles in the fourth from right fielder Glen Sherman (25, Paupack Township) and second baseman Arthur Simpson (24, Mt. Cobb).

Honesdale, which fell to 2-3, got a solo homer in the ninth from first baseman Ernie Martins (49, Honesdale).

In other league action …

♦ Prompton 3, Hawley 2

The Anglers beat Hawley in the first game of the Eagles’ doubleheader by rebounding from a 2-0 deficit after an inning. Left fielder Jack Bond (26, Tyler Hill) delivered a tie-breaking solo homer in the eighth after third baseman Eddie Canzler (40, Moscow) had tied the game with a two-out, two run single in the fifth.

Hawley had taken a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-out, two-run bomb by catcher Scott McDowell (23, Mt. Cobb).

Lake Ariel 4, Damascus 3

The Angels rallied for their first victory, winning it in the bottom of the 10th on a walk-off RBI double by catcher John Connolly (50, Lakeville), who had tied the game with a solo homer in the eighth. Connolly finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, a homer, two RBIs and a run.

Lake Ariel shortstop Rich Drake (35, Hamlin) added two doubles, a single and two runs scored, third baseman Mark “Thrash” Oliver (36, Greeley) had three hits, and left fielder Mike Hoffman (22, Clifford) singled twice and drove in two.

Right fielder Donald “Fingers” Phillips (49, Forest City) singled and doubled for Damascus, and reliever John Pelletier (21, Honesdale) had a two-run single, but gave up Connolly’s game-tying homer in the eighth.

Danny Millard
Danny Millard

Lefty Danny Millard (40, Beach Lake) tossed a complete-game three-hitter as the Starrucca Hawks stayed unbeaten with a 2-1 victory over the Prompton Anglers on Tuesday evening.

Millard allowed an unearned run in the top of the sixth and finished with one walk and 12 strikeouts. He coaxed 124 pitches, 84 strikes, out of his 40-year-old arm while making his second start of the season.

“I’m not going to lie — I was getting tired out there,” Millard said after the win. “I’d trade a few of those strikeouts for some one-pitch outs. But the soreness will be easier to deal with tomorrow because we got the win today.”

Starrucca took the lead in the second inning on a solo homer by shortstop Ryan Thompson (24, Mt. Cobb), but Prompton knotted things up with an unearned run on a two-out, RBI single by second baseman Tim Johnson (43, Mt. Cobb).

The Hawks immediately retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double by left fielder Felix Inger (45, Forest City).

Prompton starter Justin Wright (20, Forest City) took the loss while going the distance, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four.

Brent St. John (27, Greentown) went the distance for the win, giving up a run on seven hits and three walks while striking out five.

Lake Ariel center fielder Ralph “Refund” Paulton (22, Waymart) tried to get the best of his hometown team by singling twice and scoring the Angels’ only run.

Honesdale 4, Bethany 2

All six runs came in the last two innings, and it was left fielder Sam Beasley’s (34, Cherry Ridge) three-run homer in the top of the eighth that made the difference for Honesdale.

“Beasley was beastly tonight,” joked Honesdale manager Steve Shanney.

Beasley finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, and third baseman Paul McDaniel (45, Waymart) singled twice, doubled, drove in a run and scored a run in the win.

Bethany catcher Bryan Jenkins (38, Palmyra Township) had a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth. Damascus third baseman Haywood “Dog Pound” Adams (27, Forest City) and Starrucca lefty Cole Lunday (43, Palmyra Township) were named Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, after the opening week of the inaugural season in the Wayne County Baseball League.

Adams had a big week as the Damascus Grays went 2-1. He finished the three games going 5-for-12 (.455) with a double, triple, run scored and a walk. He singled and tripled in a 3-1 season-opening loss to Bethany on Tuesday, then singled, doubled and scored a run in a 5-2 win over Honesdale on Thursday.

“I’m just tryna’ do my thing,” Adams said. “Just wait til they unleash me on the base paths. I aint’ shown nothin’ yet.”

Lunday won both of his starts, going the distance each time. He opened the season by allowing a run on four hits and a walk while striking out 12 in a 2-1 victory at Waymart. Four days later, he held Hawley to two runs on six hits and two walks while fanning eight in a 3-2 win over Hawley.

“I’ve been playing this game a long time and I’d like to think I’ve learned a trick or two,” said Lunday. “Someone has to knock all these kids back a peg or two from time to time, and I’m happy to be the one to do it.”

Blues, Eagles Make Rare Trade

Kane Lund
Kane Lund
Steven Jones
Steven Jones

The Bethany Blues and Hawley Eagles made a rare trade Monday, with the Blues acquiring second baseman Kane Lund (26, Moscow) in exchange for infielder Steven Jones (27, Honesdale).

Lund had started all three games this season for Hawley, going 3-for-12 with an RBI and a run scored. Jones, meanwhile, had come off the bench in all three games for Bethany, doubling and striking out in two at bats.

“I’m not really sure what to think,” Lund said when asked about the trade. “We’re a week into the first season of this league’s existence and I get traded. I don’t know if Hawley didn’t want me at all or Bethany really really wanted me. I think I’ll be looking forward to facing those guys sometime soon.”

Lund will get his wish this coming week, as Bethany travels to Hawley on Thursday.

Jones was a little more upbeat about the trade.

“They know I can play first base a lot better than third,” he said, referring to the position Bethany used Jones at. “And I think they’re looking for someone to play first, so I’m looking forward to an opportunity to show what I can do.”

Righty Jack Mitchell (44, Orson) and lefty John “Mauler” Pelletier (21, Honesdale) teamed up to toss a two-hit shutout to lead Damascus to a 1-0 victory over the Prompton Anglers in Wayne County Baseball League action on Saturday.

Mitchell went the first six innings before being lifted for a pinch-hitter, allowing one run on three walks and fanning four to pick up the win. Pelletier followed and worked the final three innings, allowing a lone single while striking out five.

“That’s as good as you can ask for from two guys,” Damascus manager Bo Rivers said. “Jack battled for six innings, which is what we were hoping to get out of him. We were lucky enough to have a lead to hand to John and he did the rest.”

The Grays scored the game’s only run in the top of the sixth when they loaded the bases with no outs on two walks and a single. Right fielder Donald Phillips (49, Forest City) delivered an RBI sac fly to drive in center fielder Grigory Misitnikov, who had led off the inning with a walk.

Starrucca 3, Hawley 2

Starrucca lefty Cole Lunday (43, Palmyra Township) overcame a two-run first inning to go the distance, allowing just those two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight as the Hawks stayed unbeaten. Lunday used his cutter and big, slow curveball to limit the Eagles to just three hits over the final eight innings.

The Hawks, who responded to Hawley’s two-run first inning with one of their own, scored the decisive run in the second on third baseman Alex Cross (25, South Gibson) doubled with one out, moved to third on a bunt by Lunday and scored on a wild pitch. Cross and right fielder Glen Sherman (25, Paupack Township) each finished with two hits.

Hawley center fielder Ramiro Martinez (41, Hawley) delivered a two-run double in the first inning for the Eagles’ only output.

Waymart 3, Honesdale 2

A pair of 40-somethings got the job done at the plate as Waymart won a battle of winless teams.

Left fielder Cy Irvin (44, Uniondale) laced a two-run double in the fifth inning as Waymart overcame an early two-run deficit. Irvin’s line drive down the right field line tied the score, and first baseman Joe Harris (42, Honesdale) gave the Generals the victory with a two-out, RBI single in the seventh.

Waymart starter Ed Jones (26, Damascus) allowed two first-inning runs and finished allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out five. Another well-seasoned veteran, Jake Sims (48, South Canaan), pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

Thursday, June 5, 2014

Jamie Andrade
Jamie Andrade

Left-fielder Jaime Andrade’s long three-run home run highlighted a five-run fourth inning that propelled the Damascus Grays to a 5-2 victory over the Honesdale Eagles on Thursday.

The Grays also got an RBI double from second baseman Norm Lewis and an RBI single from shortstop Alexander Loring in the inning. But it was Andrade’s majestic blast well beyond the fence in left field at Damascus Memorial Park that was the difference.

“I fouled off a fastball on the pitch before, so I had a feeling he (Honesdale starter John Morris) might come with a breaking ball, and I was right,” Andrade said. “He’s been around for a while and everyone knows he likes his curveball, so I was ready for it.”

Damascus starter Brandeis Lector was the beneficiary of the big inning. He went the distance, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four.

Honesdale shortstop Bill Cordonova, who had two hits, ripped a solo homer in the second and second baseman Denny Cole had an RBI double in the first.
